On the night of 27th/28th May, 1918, the 7th London battalion of 174 Brigade, 58th Division was relieved from the front line in the Millencourt sector to the east of the town of Albert and moved back into reserve in Hénencourt Wood. In the early hours of the morning of 31st May, the enemy shelled the wood for over an hour forcing the battalion to withdraw to a safer position. But this move came too late for the twenty seven members of 7th London were casualties of this shell fire. Four of these, one of whom was Frederick Ellis, were killed. |
